Straight from the Alaska guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records (the state office, not a court): $30 for the first certified copy and $25 for each extra copy ordered at the same time.

  • DMV

Alaska law says to tell the DMV within 30 days of a name change. It has to be done in person, with a certified marriage certificate from Vital Records, and the new card is issued as a duplicate: $15, or $35 for REAL ID ($20 / $40 if you renew at the same time).

  • Deadline

Alaska law (AS 28.05.071) says to notify the DMV within 30 days of a name change.

  • Social Security online

Alaska licenses and IDs don't qualify, and neither do Alaska marriage records. Because neither Alaska licenses nor Alaska marriage records qualify for the online route, plan on mailing your documents to SSA or visiting an office.

  • Voter registration

Update your registration online (after your DMV record shows the new name), on a paper form or in person, at least 30 days before an election.

  • Social Security first?

We didn't find an Alaska DMV rule asking for the new Social Security card. Update Social Security first so your records match.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. An Alaska REAL ID shows a star in the top right corner; a standard card says "Federal limits apply."

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Alaska, marriage licenses are issued by the state, and the person who performs the ceremony returns the completed certificate to Health Analytics and Vital Records in Juneau within seven days. Certified copies come only from Vital Records (offices in Juneau and Anchorage), not from a court or borough. The decorative certificate you may get at the ceremony can't be used as proof of marriage. The DMV requires a marriage certificate from Vital Statistics.
