At a glance

Colorado, in six lines

Straight from the Colorado guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county clerk and recorder in the county that issued your marriage license. Copies are inexpensive (about $1 per document). Agencies want originals or certified copies.

  • DMV

Colorado says to renew your license in your new name within 30 days of a marriage name change, by appointment at a driver license office, after Social Security has your new name.

  • Deadline

Yes. Colorado DMV says to renew your credential with the new name within 30 days of a marriage name change.

  • Social Security online

Colorado licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Colorado marriage records. Since both Colorado licenses and Colorado marriage records qualify, a Colorado couple married in Colorado can often use the online route.

  • Voter registration

Colorado name changes on your voter registration must be made on the paper voter registration form (not online), returned to your county clerk and recorder.

  • Social Security first?

Colorado DMV says the change must already be recorded with Social Security before you go, and that SSA takes about 24–48 hours to process it.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. Colorado REAL ID credentials have a black star (2020 design) or a gold star (before 2020). Standard credentials with a black banner aren't REAL ID-compliant.

Where to order your marriage certificate

Certified copies come from the county clerk and recorder in the county that issued your marriage license. Colorado DMV says a certified copy must carry an official court, county, city or state seal or stamp; a photocopy you make yourself won't work, and a notary public can't certify documents.
