Connecticut, in six lines

Straight from the Connecticut guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the vital records office of the town where you married ($20 per copy in Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford and Stamford), or from the State Vital Records Office ($20).

  • DMV

In Connecticut, update Social Security first and allow up to 48 hours. Then book a DMV appointment; the name change is $30.

  • Deadline

We didn't find a Connecticut deadline in days for changing your name on your license. The DMV only lets you change it after SSA has processed your change, so book your appointment once that's done.

  • Social Security online

Connecticut licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Connecticut marriage records. Because Connecticut marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Connecticut may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Fill in a voter registration application, check "Name Change" and write your previous name. Your registrars can't change names from the fifth Tuesday before a regular election through Election Day.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. The Connecticut DMV says SSA must process your name change first, which can take up to 48 hours.

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you may need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. A Connecticut REAL ID has a gold star in the top right corner. For a REAL ID, bring name change documents along with the other REAL ID documents.

Where to order your marriage certificate

Connecticut has no county clerks. Your marriage license is filed with the vital records office of the town where you married, and that office sells certified copies. You can also order from the town where either of you lived at the time, or from the State Vital Records Office (which can take up to 12 weeks). The DMV needs the original or certified document; it won't accept photocopies or religious marriage certificates.
