Florida, in six lines

Straight from the Florida guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the clerk of court in the county that issued your license, or from the Florida Department of Health (Bureau of Vital Statistics) once the record reaches the state (about 60 days). Agencies want originals or certified copies.

  • FLHSMV

Florida requires an in-person visit for a name change, and Social Security must be updated first.

  • Deadline

FLHSMV says name changes must be updated on both your license/ID and your title/registration within 30 days.

  • Social Security online

Florida licenses and IDs qualify. Since Florida licenses qualify, a Florida resident is usually only limited by where they married.

  • Voter registration

Update your voter record online at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov, at a tax collector office, or on the paper application (DS-DE 39). Florida law requires a voter registration application for a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security first?

Florida checks your name against Social Security's records, so SSA must be updated first; allow 24 to 48 hours. FLHSMV's name-change page doesn't say you must carry the new card itself, but it's the simplest proof of SSN in your new name.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. A compliant Florida card has a star in the upper right corner. If yours doesn't, you'll need to bring the full document set (primary ID, SSN proof, two address proofs, and your name-change link) when you visit.

Step 1 · Certified copies

Where to order your marriage certificate

After the ceremony, the license goes back to the county clerk of court to be recorded, then on to the state Bureau of Vital Statistics. That trip takes about 60 days, so if you need proof sooner, order from the clerk in the county that issued your license. The state certificate is an abstract of the license information, and the Department of Health says it is acceptable evidence that the marriage was finalized and recorded.
