Georgia, in six lines

Straight from the Georgia guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the probate court in the county that issued your marriage license. If you chose your new name on the license application, ask for a certified copy of the application too. Agencies want originals or certified copies.

  • DDS

Georgia requires an in-person DDS visit within 60 days of a name change. Your first change in a license term is free.

  • Deadline

Yes. Georgia DDS says to get a new license showing your married name within 60 days.

  • Social Security online

Georgia licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Georgia marriage records. Since both Georgia licenses and Georgia marriage records qualify, a Georgia couple married in Georgia can often use the online route.

  • Voter registration

Georgia counties say to update your name on your voter registration at least 30 days before an election, online through the Secretary of State or on a new application.

  • Social Security first?

DDS asks for your full Social Security number on the online application form and checks it electronically; it asks for an SSN document only if the number doesn't verify. Update SSA first so the names match.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. All Georgia licenses and IDs issued after 2012 are compliant and have a gold or black star in the upper right corner. TSA doesn't accept Georgia's temporary paper license, and the permanent card can take up to 30 days to arrive, so don't change your license right before a flight.

Step 1 · Certified copies

Where to order your marriage certificate

Certified copies come from the probate court in the county where your marriage license was issued. In Georgia, the name you choose on the marriage license application matters: georgia.gov says that if you chose your spouse's name there, your marriage certificate from the probate court is your legal name-change document, with no court petition needed. A hyphenated surname on your license requires a certified copy of the application showing that choice (marriages in Georgia on or after Nov 1, 1982). The State Office of Vital Records only holds marriages from June 1952 to August 1996.
