Hawaiʻi, in six lines

Straight from the Hawaiʻi guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health: $10 for the first certified copy and $4 for each extra copy on the same order, plus a $2.50 administration fee for up to five copies.

  • DMV

Hawaiʻi law says to tell the examiner of drivers within 30 days of a name change. Licenses are issued by your county, in person, and the fee depends on the county: $6 on Oʻahu and the Big Island, $12 on Maui, $10 on Kauaʻi.

  • Deadline

Hawaiʻi law (HRS § 286-116.5) says to notify the examiner of drivers within 30 days of a name change.

  • Social Security online

Hawaiʻi licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Hawaiʻi marriage records. Because Hawaiʻi marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Hawaiʻi may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Update your registration online, on a paper application, or by letting the DMV pass along your new name when you apply for your license.

  • Social Security first?

We didn't find a Hawaiʻi licensing rule asking for the new Social Security card. Update Social Security first so your records match.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. A Hawaiʻi REAL ID has a star; there's no extra fee for it. The temporary paper card isn't accepted for flying, and the plastic card can take weeks to arrive.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Hawaiʻi, certified marriage certificates come from the State Department of Health (Vital Records), not from a county. If you married in Hawaiʻi and your marriage certificate says you'll take your spouse's name, you don't need a separate name change from the Lieutenant Governor. Fees are set per order: $10 for the first copy, $4 for each additional copy, plus a $2.50 administration fee for every five copies.
