Idaho, in six lines

Straight from the Idaho guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county recorder where you married (Ada County mails one certified copy after the license is returned; extra copies are $2) or Idaho Vital Records ($16, online or by mail only).

  • ITD

Update Social Security first, then apply for a duplicate license ($20) at your county driver's license office, or change your name when you renew.

  • Deadline

We couldn't find an Idaho deadline in days for a marriage name change. Idaho law says you may apply for a duplicate when your name legally changes, and ITD lets you change it at renewal if you're eligible.

  • Social Security online

Idaho licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Idaho marriage records. Because Idaho marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Idaho may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Update your registration the same way you register: online, or by mailing the form to your county clerk. The online deadline is 11 days before an election; you can also register when you vote in person.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. ITD's handbook says your name must be updated with Social Security before you change it on your license.

REAL ID

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Idaho you get your marriage license from the county recorder, and that office sells certified copies. Idaho Vital Records (Department of Health and Welfare) also sells them, but has no public counter: order online or by mail. ITD needs a state-certified marriage certificate; photocopies and laminated documents aren't accepted.
