Indiana, in six lines

Straight from the Indiana guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the clerk of the circuit court in the county that issued your license. Indiana's courts say each certified copy is $4.00 and that it's the copy you need for the BMV and Social Security.

  • BMV

Indiana's BMV says to visit a branch within 30 days of a name change, at least one business day after Social Security has your new name. It can't be done online.

  • Deadline

Yes. Indiana's BMV says to visit a branch within 30 days of a name change to apply for an updated license or ID.

  • Social Security online

Indiana licenses and IDs qualify; Indiana marriage records don't. Because Indiana marriage records don't qualify for the online route, Indiana couples married in Indiana should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Update your name online at indianavoters.in.gov (with a valid Indiana license or ID), or on the state voter registration form by mail or in person, before the registration deadline.

  • Social Security first?

The BMV says to update Social Security first and wait at least one business day before visiting a branch; your name must match SSA's records.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. Indiana Real ID cards have a star in the top right corner; non-compliant cards say "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES" at the top. For a Real ID, bring legal proof of any name changes.

Step 1 · Certified copies

Where to order your marriage certificate

Certified copies come from the county clerk (clerk of the circuit court) in the county that issued your marriage license. Your officiant must return the signed license, and the clerk then records it. Indiana's courts say each certified copy of the marriage license is $4.00 and is the copy required for a name change at the BMV and Social Security. The BMV accepts only originals or certified copies from the issuing agency.
