Kansas, in six lines

Straight from the Kansas guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the Kansas Office of Vital Statistics (KDHE), $20 per certified copy. Kansas "duplicate" marriage licenses from the courthouse aren't accepted for your license.

  • Kansas DMV

Kansas law gives you 10 days after a name change by marriage to notify the Division of Vehicles. Update Social Security at least 24 hours first; a name change is $16 on a license or $12 on an ID.

  • Deadline

Yes. Kansas law (K.S.A. 8-248) says to notify the Division of Vehicles in writing within 10 days of a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security online

Kansas licenses and IDs qualify; Kansas marriage records don't. Because Kansas marriage records don't qualify for the online route, couples married in Kansas should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Complete a new voter registration form with your new name. Registration books close 21 days before an election.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. The Kansas Department of Revenue says to update your name with Social Security at least 24 hours before you update your Kansas license.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Kansas, completed marriage licenses are filed with the clerk of the district court in the county that issued them, which forwards them to the Office of Vital Statistics (KDHE). The Kansas Department of Revenue asks for a government-issued marriage certificate and says Kansas "duplicate" marriage licenses and ceremonial church certificates aren't accepted, so order your certified copy from KDHE.
