Kentucky, in six lines

Straight from the Kentucky guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county clerk that issued your marriage license (Jefferson, Fayette, Kenton and Boone charge $5 a certified copy, more by mail), or from the Office of Vital Statistics ($6) for marriages since June 1958.

  • KYTC

Kentucky law gives you 10 days after a name change by marriage to apply for a corrected license. Update Social Security first; the name change is $15 at a Driver Licensing Regional Office.

  • Deadline

Yes. Kentucky law (KRS 186.540) says to apply for a corrected license within 10 days of a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security online

Kentucky licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Kentucky marriage records. Because Kentucky marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Kentucky may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Update your voter registration online, by mail or in person. Registration closes on the fourth Tuesday before a primary or general election.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. KYTC says to update Social Security first, and to bring your updated Social Security card with your marriage certificate.

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, standard Kentucky licenses and IDs aren't accepted for domestic flights; you need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport. A Kentucky REAL ID shows a black star icon and can only be requested in person at a Driver Licensing Regional Office.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Kentucky you get your marriage license from the county clerk, and that office sells certified copies. The state Office of Vital Statistics (OVS) has marriage records from June 1958 to the present; for earlier marriages it says to call the county clerk where the license was issued. KYTC's name-change form asks for a certified marriage certificate.
