At a glance

Louisiana, in six lines

Straight from the Louisiana guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the clerk of court in the parish where you married (East Baton Rouge and Jefferson $10; St. Tammany $12; Lafayette $5). Orleans Parish records come from the Louisiana Department of Health ($5).

  • OMV

Report your name change to Social Security first, then visit an OMV office with your original, certified marriage certificate. A name change is a duplicate: $17.00 plus a local fee of up to $8, and your expiration date stays the same.

  • Deadline

We couldn't find a Louisiana deadline in days for a marriage name change. The 10-day rule in Louisiana law is for address changes. OMV does say the name on all your credentials must be changed at the same time.

  • Social Security online

Louisiana licenses and IDs qualify; Louisiana marriage records don't. Because Louisiana marriage records don't qualify for the online route, couples married in Louisiana should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Complete a voter registration application and check "Update voter registration". Changes count for an election if made 20 days before online (GeauxVote) or 30 days before in person or by mail.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. OMV says all name changes must be recorded with Social Security before you visit, and its policy says this takes about 24 hours.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Louisiana you get your marriage license from the clerk of court in your parish, and that office sells certified copies. In Orleans Parish, marriage records come from the Louisiana Department of Health Vital Records office. OMV needs the original, certified marriage certificate; copies aren't accepted.
