Maine, in six lines

Straight from the Maine guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the town or city clerk where your marriage was filed, or from Maine CDC Vital Records: $15 for the first certified copy and $6 for each extra copy ordered at the same time.

  • BMV

Maine law says to tell the Secretary of State within 30 days of a name change. You can't do it online: visit a BMV office. The updated card counts as a duplicate: $5, or $30 for REAL ID.

  • Deadline

Maine law (29-A MRSA §1407) says to notify the Secretary of State within 30 days of a name change.

  • Social Security online

Maine licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Maine marriage records. Because Maine marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Maine may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Give your town or city registrar written notice of your new and former names (or update online) before registration closes, or see the registrar on Election Day.

  • Social Security first?

We didn't find a Maine BMV rule asking for the new card. Update Social Security first so your records match.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Maine, marriages are handled by towns and cities, not counties. After the ceremony, the officiant returns the completed license to the clerk who issued it. Certified copies come from that town or city clerk, or from Maine CDC Vital Records in Augusta. State law lets clerks charge up to $15 for the first copy and $6 for each additional copy.
