At a glance

Maryland, in six lines

Straight from the Maryland guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the circuit court clerk in the county where you married (Montgomery, Prince George's and Anne Arundel $5.50; Baltimore County $5 plus $0.50 a page), or from the state Division of Vital Records ($12) for marriages since 2007. Photocopies aren't accepted.

  • MVA

Maryland law gives you 30 days to tell the MVA about a name change by marriage. Update Social Security at least 72 hours before your MVA appointment; a corrected license is $30.

  • Deadline

Yes. Maryland law (Transportation §16-116) says to notify the MVA within 30 days of a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security online

Maryland licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Maryland marriage records. Because Maryland marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Maryland may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Update your voter registration online or with your local board, or let the MVA send your new name to the board. Registration closes 21 days before an election.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. The MVA says to update your name with Social Security at least 72 hours before your MVA appointment.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. A Maryland REAL ID has the REAL ID star in the upper right-hand corner, and the MVA must have one proof of age and identity, proof of Social Security, and two proofs of Maryland residency on file. Check your status with the MVA's REAL ID Lookup Tool.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Maryland you get your marriage license from the county circuit court clerk, and that clerk sells certified copies. The Maryland Department of Health's Division of Vital Records issues certified copies for marriages on or after January 1, 2007; for earlier marriages it says to contact the circuit court of the county where you married, or the Maryland State Archives. The MVA does not accept photocopies.
