Minnesota, in six lines

Straight from the Minnesota guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county that issued your marriage license (Hennepin, Dakota and Anoka $9; Ramsey $10). Some counties also take orders through the Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS).

  • DVS

Minnesota law gives you 30 days after a name change by marriage to apply for a duplicate license. Wait until Social Security has processed your change; a duplicate license is $26.

  • Deadline

Yes. Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. §171.11) says to apply for a duplicate license within 30 days of a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security online

Minnesota licenses and IDs qualify; Minnesota marriage records don't. Because Minnesota marriage records don't qualify for the online route, couples married in Minnesota should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Re-register under your new name online, on a paper form, or at your polling place or an early voting location.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. DVS says to change your name with Social Security first and wait until SSA has processed it; your full legal name must match your Social Security card.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Minnesota, certified copies of your marriage certificate come from the county that issued your marriage license. Anoka County, for example, says the license must have been purchased there, and lets you order through the Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS). DVS asks for a certified marriage certificate (or a marriage license with a certified recorded marriage date).
