Mississippi, in six lines

Straight from the Mississippi guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the circuit clerk in the county that issued your marriage license (Harrison and Madison $17, $6 for each additional copy) or the Mississippi State Department of Health ($17, $6 for additional copies ordered at the same time).

  • Driver Service Bureau

Mississippi law gives you 30 days after a name change by marriage to notify the Department of Public Safety. You can't change your name online; go in person with a certified copy of your marriage license.

  • Deadline

Yes. Mississippi law (Miss. Code §63-1-19) says to notify the Department of Public Safety within 30 days of a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security online

Mississippi licenses and IDs qualify; Mississippi marriage records don't. Because Mississippi marriage records don't qualify for the online route, couples married in Mississippi should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Update online with the Secretary of State or complete a voter registration form at your circuit clerk's office. A mailed application must be postmarked or delivered no later than 30 days before an election.

  • Social Security first?

Not at first. DPS says your Social Security card doesn't have to show your new name for the first transaction, but strongly encourages you to update it before you renew. Updating Social Security first (step 2) keeps your records matching.

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you may need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. DPS says all Mississippi driver's licenses and IDs are REAL ID compliant and have the gold star.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Mississippi you get your marriage license from the circuit clerk in your county, and that office sells certified copies. The Mississippi State Department of Health also issues certified copies of marriages since January 1, 1926 (July 1938 to December 1941 only from the county). DPS needs the original document, and the law asks for a certified copy of your marriage license.
