Missouri, in six lines

Straight from the Missouri guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the recorder of deeds in the county (or the City of St. Louis) that issued your license. Jackson County $10, City of St. Louis $12, St. Louis County, St. Charles and Greene $9.

  • license office

In Missouri you take a certified marriage license and your other documents to a license office and pay for a duplicate license with your new name.

  • Deadline

We didn't find one in the Department of Revenue's name-change guidance. Update soon after Social Security so your records match.

  • Social Security online

Missouri licenses, IDs and marriage records all qualify. Because Missouri marriage records qualify, couples married in Missouri may be able to use the online route.

  • Voter registration

Contact your local election authority before the election, or tell the election judge at your polling place.

  • Social Security first?

The Department of Revenue asks for proof of your Social Security number. Updating Social Security first keeps your records matching.

ItemFee
Duplicate Class F (regular) driver license$16.50 (3-year) or $25.50 (6-year)

From the Department of Revenue fee chart. If you haven't had a REAL ID yet, Missouri allows a one-time waiver of the duplicate transaction fee, but license office processing fees ($9 or $18) still apply. Confirm before you go.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license or ID, or another TSA-accepted ID such as a passport, for domestic flights. Missouri's REAL ID cards have a star in the upper right-hand corner; a non-compliant card says "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES". If your name differs from your identity document, bring a certified marriage license. Allow 10–15 days for the card to arrive by mail.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Missouri the completed license goes back to the recorder of deeds that issued it for recording (St. Charles and Greene County describe this). The Department of Revenue calls the document you need a certified marriage license, issued by the recorder of deeds in the county where you were married, the state office of vital statistics, or an equivalent agency in your state or country of marriage. It must be an original certified document with the stamp or raised seal; a church or chapel certificate, photocopy or fax isn't acceptable.
