At a glance

Montana, in six lines

Straight from the Montana guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the Clerk of District Court in the county where you bought your license: $5 per copy plus $2 to certify ($7) under the statewide fee schedule. The state vital records office doesn't issue marriage certificates.

  • MVD

Update Social Security at least 24 hours before you go: MVD checks your name with SSA and denies a mismatch. Then book an in-person appointment for a replacement ($10.30).

  • Deadline

We couldn't find a Montana deadline in days for a marriage name change. Montana's 10-day notice law covers address changes.

  • Social Security online

Montana licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Montana marriage records. Because Montana marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Montana may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Complete a new voter registration application with your new name and return it to your county election administrator.

  • Social Security first?

No card needed, but SSA must have your new name at least 24 hours before you go: MVD checks with SSA and denies a mismatch.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Montana your marriage record is kept by the Clerk of District Court in the county where you bought the license (not necessarily where you held the ceremony). Only that office issues official certificates; Montana Vital Records keeps an index but doesn't issue them. A certified copy is a $5 copy plus a $2 certification fee under the statewide schedule.
