Nebraska, in six lines

Straight from the Nebraska guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county clerk where you got your license ($16 per certified copy under state law) or Nebraska DHHS Vital Records ($16).

  • DMV

Nebraska law gives you 60 days to update your license after a name change. Update Social Security first, then apply in person for a replacement ($16).

  • Deadline

Nebraska law requires you to apply for a replacement license or ID within 60 days of your name change.

  • Social Security online

Nebraska licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Nebraska marriage records. Because Nebraska marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Nebraska may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Re-register under your new name: use the state's online portal after the DMV or the paper form, and check "Name Change".

  • Social Security first?

We didn't find a Nebraska DMV rule asking for the new card. The DMV verifies your Social Security number with SSA, so update Social Security first.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you may need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. Nebraska's REAL ID mark is a star in the upper right corner: a white star in a black circle on cards issued since March 2026, or a white star in a gold circle on older cards.
