Nevada, in six lines

Straight from the Nevada guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the County Clerk in Clark County, or the County Recorder in every other Nevada county, in the county where you bought your license. Agencies want originals or certified copies.

  • DMV

Nevada DMV requires an office visit for a name change, and Social Security must be updated first.

  • Deadline

We didn't find a deadline for updating your name with the Nevada DMV.

  • Social Security online

Nevada driver licenses qualify; Nevada state ID cards do not (SSA lists Nevada as "driver license only"). Since Nevada driver licenses qualify, a Nevada resident with a license is usually only limited by where they married. If you only have a Nevada ID card, it does not count for the online route, so plan on the mail or office route.

  • Voter registration

Nevada law says a registered voter who changes their name must complete a new voter registration application.

  • Social Security first?

Nevada DMV checks your name electronically with SSA, so SSA must be updated first (allow at least 2 business days). DMV says an updated Social Security card alone isn't sufficient; bring the certified marriage certificate too.

Fees (Nevada DMV)

ItemFee
Name change: non-commercial license$8.50
Name change: ID card$7.50 (fee schedule lists $8.50; confirm)
Name change: commercial license$12.50

From DMV's name-change page. DMV's fee schedule lists "Change of Information" for an ID card at $8.50, so confirm the ID fee at the office.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. A compliant Nevada card has a gold star in the upper right corner. For REAL ID, DMV needs proof of all name changes. A Social Security card isn't accepted as proof of a name change.

Where to order your marriage certificate

Nevada doesn't let you choose a new married name on the marriage license. You change your name afterward, using the certified marriage certificate. After the ceremony, your officiant has 10 calendar days to file the certificate (in Clark County it is filed within one or two business days of receipt). Certificates are filed with the County Clerk in Clark County and with the County Recorder in all other counties. The state Office of Vital Records doesn't issue certified copies; it only verifies records ($10 per name search).
