At a glance

New Hampshire, in six lines

Straight from the New Hampshire guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From any New Hampshire city or town clerk (for marriages from 1960 on) or the state Division of Vital Records Administration: $15 for the first copy, $10 for each extra copy of the same record ordered at the same time, set by state law.

  • DMV

New Hampshire law says to tell the DMV about a name change within 30 days. You go in person, by appointment, and the replacement license is free.

  • Deadline

New Hampshire law (RSA 263:9) says to notify the DMV within 30 days of a name change.

  • Social Security online

New Hampshire driver's licenses and IDs qualify. New Hampshire marriage records don't qualify for SSA's online route, so couples married in New Hampshire should plan on an SSA office visit or applying by mail.

  • Voter registration

Fill out a voter registration form marked "Name Change/Address Update" with your town or city clerk or the supervisors of the checklist.

  • Social Security first?

The DMV's name-change page doesn't say to update Social Security first, but doing SSA first keeps your records matching. Bring your marriage certificate either way.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. REAL ID is optional in New Hampshire; a non-compliant card says "NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION." For a REAL ID, your identity documents must show your current name, or you need proof of each name change (a document for each marriage).

Where to order your marriage certificate

New Hampshire marriage records are kept in a statewide system. For marriages from 1960 on, any city or town clerk in the state can issue a certified copy, and so can the state Division of Vital Records Administration in Concord. State law (RSA 5-C:10) sets the fee: $15 for the search, which includes the first copy, and $10 for each extra copy of the same record ordered at the same time. The $15 is due even if no record is found. You must show photo ID. Records are closed: only the couple, immediate family or someone with a "direct and tangible" interest can get a copy.
