New Mexico, in six lines

Straight from the New Mexico guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county clerk where your marriage was recorded. Fees in the largest counties run $2 to $5 per certified copy.

  • MVD

New Mexico law says to tell MVD within 10 days of a name change by marriage. Bring a certified copy of your marriage record to MVD; a license is $18 (four years) or $34 (eight years).

  • Deadline

New Mexico law (NMSA 66-5-22) says to notify MVD within 10 days of a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security online

New Mexico licenses and IDs qualify, but New Mexico marriage records don't yet. Because New Mexico marriage records aren't on SSA's online list yet, most couples married in New Mexico will need to apply in person or by mail.

  • Voter registration

Submit a new voter registration form with your new name (online with a NM license or ID, or to your county clerk) at least 28 days before an election, or update it in person when you vote.

  • Social Security first?

We didn't find a New Mexico MVD rule asking for the new card. Update Social Security first so your records match.

Step 1 · Certified copies

Where to order your marriage certificate

In New Mexico, your officiant and witnesses sign the certificate and it goes back to the county clerk, who records it. After that, the clerk sells certified copies. Each county sets its own fee. Bernalillo County advises against using the license itself as proof of marriage, so order certified copies.

WhereCertified copy fee (as published)How to order
Bernalillo County Clerk (Albuquerque)$3 per copyOnline or in the office
Doña Ana County Clerk (Las Cruces)$2.50 per copyCopy Request Form; usually mailed within 1 to 2 business days

Sandoval County Clerk$2.00 per copyUnredacted copies only to the couple; bring your driver's license
