New York, in six lines

Straight from the New York guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

Outside New York City: from the town or city clerk where you applied for your license (or the NYS Department of Health). In New York City: from the NYC City Clerk. Agencies want originals or certified copies.

  • DMV

New York lets you change a Standard license by mail in some cases. REAL ID and Enhanced cards need an office visit.

  • Deadline

We didn't find a deadline for updating your name with the New York DMV.

  • Social Security online

New York licenses and IDs qualify. Since New York licenses qualify, a New York resident is usually only limited by where they married.

  • Voter registration

Update your registration through the State Board of Elections online portal or on a paper voter registration form. Changes must reach your county board at least 15 days before an election.

  • Social Security first?

For the mail route, yes: DMV wants a copy of your new Social Security card, and the name must match it exactly. For an office visit, DMV's page lists MV-44, your current license or ID (or 6 points of proof of identity and date of birth) and your marriage certificate.

ItemFee

REAL ID

REAL ID / Enhanced

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. A New York card without a star or a flag isn't compliant. REAL ID costs nothing extra; Enhanced (which also works at land and sea borders with Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries) adds $30. DMV may only print your legal name on these cards and needs proof of each name change to connect your documents.

Where to order your marriage certificate

New York lets you choose your new name on the marriage license application itself. The Department of Health explains that either spouse can enter a new surname (the other spouse's, a former surname, a combined or hyphenated name) and a new middle name (for example, your premarriage surname). The marriage certificate showing the new name is proof that using it is lawful. The license can't be changed later to record a name you decide on after the wedding, but you can still change your name by usage. Outside NYC, the clerk mails you a Certificate of Marriage Registration within 15 days after the completed license is returned. That's your first copy. Order more from the clerk or the state.
