North Dakota, in six lines

Straight from the North Dakota guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county that issued your marriage license (not the state): fees vary by county, from $5 to $10 for the first copy in the largest counties.

  • NDDOT

North Dakota says to get a corrected license within 10 days of a name change. You go in person to a Driver License site, and it costs $3 if you aren't renewing.

  • Deadline

NDDOT says anyone with a name change must purchase a corrected license within 10 days.

  • Social Security online

North Dakota driver's licenses and IDs qualify, and so do North Dakota marriage records. Because North Dakota marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in North Dakota may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

North Dakota has no voter registration. Your license is your voter ID, so update it.

  • Social Security first?

NDDOT's name-change page doesn't say to update Social Security first, but doing SSA first keeps your records matching. Bring your certified marriage certificate either way.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. A North Dakota REAL ID has a gold star in the top right corner. If your name differs from your identity document, bring proof of the name change, such as a certified marriage certificate.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In North Dakota, certified copies of a marriage record come only from the county that issued the marriage license, not from the state. The state Vital Records office says fees vary from county to county. If you married in one county with a license from another, order from the county that issued the license. The DMV and Social Security need a certified copy; plain copies don't count.
