Oregon, in six lines

Straight from the Oregon guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county clerk that issued your marriage license (Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas and Lane charge $7.75 for the first certified copy), or from the state Center for Health Statistics ($25).

  • Oregon DMV

Oregon law gives you 30 days to tell DMV about a name change by marriage. Change your name with Social Security first; a replacement license is $30.

  • Deadline

Yes. Oregon law (ORS 807.560) says to tell DMV within 30 days of a name change by marriage.

  • Social Security online

Oregon licenses and IDs qualify; Oregon marriage records don't. Because Oregon marriage records don't qualify for the online route, couples married in Oregon should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Fill out a new paper voter registration form with your new name and send it to your county elections office. You can update until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. Oregon DMV verifies your Social Security number with SSA, so change your name with SSA first. For a REAL ID, the name must match SSA's records.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. An Oregon REAL ID has a star inside a black circle in the upper right corner; a standard card says "Not for REAL ID Act." Adding REAL ID costs $30 on top of the card fee.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Oregon you get your marriage license from the county clerk, and that office sells certified copies once your license has been returned after the ceremony. The souvenir copy you get at the wedding isn't legal proof. The state Center for Health Statistics (Oregon Health Authority) also sells certified copies and warns against third-party vendors that charge high fees.
