  • Certified copies

From the county clerk in the county that issued your marriage license, after the officiant has returned the signed forms and the clerk has recorded your marriage. Driver Services only accepts a certified copy issued after recording.

  • Driver Services

Tennessee name changes are done in person at a Driver Services Center. State rules say to report a name change within 10 days, and a duplicate license costs $8 to $16.

  • Deadline

Yes. Tennessee's Driver Services rules say to notify the Department of a name change within 10 days.

  • Social Security online

Tennessee licenses and IDs qualify; Tennessee marriage records don't. Because Tennessee marriage records don't qualify for the online route, Tennessee couples married in Tennessee should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Tennessee lets you update your name online at ovr.govote.tn.gov, or on a paper application mailed or taken to your county election commission, at least 5 days before an election.

  • Social Security first?

Tennessee requires your Social Security number on the application, and Driver Services advises updating your name with Social Security first so the records match.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. Tennessee REAL ID licenses and IDs have a black circle with a star in the right corner. For a REAL ID, bring name-change documents that connect your current name to the name on your proof of identity or citizenship; originals or certified copies only.

Where to order your marriage certificate

Certified copies come from the county clerk in the county where your marriage license was issued. Driver Services requires a certified copy of the marriage certificate issued after the marriage has been performed and officially recorded; it does not accept the marriage license that authorized the ceremony, an application, or an unrecorded certificate. Some counties hand couples a certified copy of the license at issuance (Shelby County says to use it for name changes), but because Driver Services requires a post-recording copy, order one after your marriage is recorded to be safe.
