Utah, in six lines

Straight from the Utah guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the county clerk that issued your license. Utah County includes one certified copy with the license and Davis County two; extra copies are $5 in Salt Lake and Davis counties and $10 in Utah County.

  • DLD

Utah's Driver License Division changes your name in person, with a certified marriage certificate. State law (Utah Code 53-3-216) sets a 10-day deadline for address changes; we didn't find one for name changes.

  • Deadline

We didn't find one. Utah Code 53-3-216 gives a 10-day deadline for an address change but sets no deadline for a name change. Update soon after Social Security so your records match.

  • Social Security online

Utah licenses and IDs qualify; Utah marriage records don't. Because Utah marriage records don't qualify for the online route, Utah couples married in Utah should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Utah says to re-register with your new name: online if your Utah license or ID already shows your new name and current address, or on a paper form to your county clerk by mail or email.

  • Social Security first?

The Driver License Division's name-change page doesn't say to update Social Security first. Doing SSA first keeps your records matching.

REAL ID

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant card or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport, for domestic flights. Utah REAL ID licenses and IDs have a gold star in the upper right-hand corner. If yours doesn't, bring proof of identity, Social Security number and Utah residency to a Driver License Division office.

Step 1 · Certified copies

Where to order your marriage certificate

Certified copies come from the county clerk in the county that issued your marriage license. In Utah the county's document is both the marriage license and the certificate of marriage. Utah County says most government offices will probably need the paper certified copy. The Driver License Division accepts only originals or certified copies with a raised seal, stamp or signature; no photocopies or faxes.
