Vermont, in six lines

Straight from the Vermont guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

From the town or city clerk where your marriage license was filed, or the Vermont Department of Health: $10 per certified copy.

  • DMV

Vermont law says to tell the DMV within 30 days of a name change. You have to go in person, and the corrected card is a replacement license: $24.

  • Deadline

Yes. Vermont law says to notify the DMV within 30 days of a name change (23 V.S.A. § 205).

  • Social Security online

Vermont licenses and IDs qualify; Vermont marriage records don't. Because Vermont marriage records don't qualify for the online route, couples married in Vermont should plan on an in-person or mail application.

  • Voter registration

Log in to the Vermont Voter Portal (My Voter Page) or contact your town clerk in person or by phone.

  • Social Security first?

Yes, if your license is REAL ID: the DMV checks your name with Social Security, so SSA records must be updated first.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Vermont, marriage certificates are kept by the town or city clerk where the license was filed and by the Department of Health Vital Records Office. State law sets the certified copy fee at $10. Your clerk is usually the fastest and cheapest option. Clerks can't sell you a copy until after the wedding, once the signed license is returned.
