Wyoming, in six lines

Straight from the Wyoming guide. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official source, the guide says to ask the agency, and so does this page.

  • Certified copies

Your county clerk gives you the first certified copy; more copies come from Wyoming Vital Statistics Services at $25 each.

  • Driver Services

Wyoming law says to tell WYDOT Driver Services within 10 days of a name change. You have to go in person to a driver exam office, after Social Security has your new name, and you pay the standard renewal fee ($35 for a Class C license).

  • Deadline

Yes. Wyoming law (W.S. 31-7-137) says to notify Driver Services within 10 days of a name change.

  • Social Security online

Wyoming driver's licenses and IDs qualify, and so do Wyoming marriage records. Because Wyoming marriage records qualify for the online route, couples married in Wyoming may be able to start their Social Security update online.

  • Voter registration

Fill out the Wyoming voter registration form (check "Name Change") and get it to your county clerk.

  • Social Security first?

Yes. Driver Services verifies your new name with Social Security, so update SSA first.

Where to order your marriage certificate

In Wyoming, marriage certificates are kept at the state level by Vital Statistics Services (Wyoming Department of Health). Your county clerk usually gives you the first certified copy when your signed license is returned; after that, most counties send you to the state. Wyoming is a closed-record state, so only the two spouses (or their lawyer) can get certified copies. State copies are $25 each.
